“The arrangement also includes us training teachers in these schools on how best to use the newspaper as a learning tool,” he explained.

According to Wanyama, Vision Group under the NiE program decided to undertake a project in four specific rural primary schools to appreciate the impact newspapers can have on the performance of learners.

They included Nyenga Boys in Buikwe district, Katebe in Mbarara, Punuoluru in Lira and Osokotoit in Serere.

“The results in these four years were amazing and eye opening in Katebe forexample, by the end of the project, there was no failure in Primary Leaving Examinations,” he said.

In Osokotoit primary, which he said had been lagging, emerged the best in Serere district recording Division One for the first time and similar success was registered in Nyenda Boys.

“The newspaper is one of the most powerful education and literacy tools ever, I say this as a newspaperman but also as a trained teacher. I know that you have spent time researching on the effectiveness of newspapers in education and I am sure the results have been positive,” he explained.

According to Wanyama, the newspapers are a good source of information and when used as a learning tool, are effective.

He said the general benefits of newspapers in sharpening learners’ comprehension and general literacy capabilities cannot be overstated.

He applauded the club for its amazing work in Ssakabusolo that continue to impact on the lives of residents positively.

Wanyama also pledged that Vision Group would support the club in rallying the public to help raise sh17b for the construction of two linear accelerators and two specialized bunker facilities built to internationally accepted radiation standards.

He said the great work done at Nsambya Hospital in making it a regional centre for cancer treatment was laudable.

In his acceptance speech, Nsamba pledged to concentrate on membership growth and retention but also do better, taking advantage of the club age composition with as old as 80-year-old members and the young generation.
